Itinerary
Day: 1
Arrival and orientation
Today is your arrival day. Transfer will be arranged from kilimanjaro international airport (or another destination in arusha, if you are not flying through jro airport) to your accommodation and your guide will come to the lodge to give you an orientation and complete a gear check to ensure you are fully ready for your climb.
Depending on your flight arrival time and your preferences, additional optional activities can be arranged around arusha for an extra cost (town tour, waterfall hike, cultural activities).
Day: 2
Arusha - mandara huts (8888 ft/2709 m)
Drive from hotel in arusha to marangu gate (about 2 1/2 hours). Here we will check in and weigh all of the bags carried by the porters. We will hike through the forest which is home to blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Most of the hike will be a gradual incline today and it will take us about 5 hours to reach our camp, mandara huts.
Day: 3
Mandara huts - horombo huts (12205 ft/3720 m)
After breakfast at mandara huts, we will head out for the day. Our hike will be a gradual upward trek with some flat stretches along the way, taking us through the heather and moorland zones. We will stop for a picnic lunch on the way, before continuing on to our camp for the night, horombo huts. Total, we will hike for about 6 hours today and will also get our first view of kibo peak (if it is clear).
Day: 4
Horombo huts
Today will be an acclimatization day. We will wake up late and have a leisurely breakfast before heading out on a short hike. Our hike will allow us to explore the area, check out the zebra rocks and view mawenzi and kibo peaks. This hike will allow us extra time to acclimatize to the altitude and discuss our upcoming summit. After our hike, we will spend the rest of the day relaxing back at horombo hut camp.
Day: 5
Horombo huts - kibo huts (15446 ft/4708 m)
We will wake up, pack for the day and then eat breakfast before continuing on our hike. Most of our day will once again be flat or a gradual upward incline (6-7 hours). As we get closer to kibo huts camp the incline will increase. After an early dinner, we will go to sleep very early in order to prepare our bodies and minds for the midnight ascent.
Day: 6
Kibo huts- uhuru peak (19341 ft/5895 m) - horombo huts
Summit day! we will wake up around midnight for breakfast and to get ready for the summit ascent. Today will be a very long day, reaching the summit then descending. From kibo huts, we will hike through switchbacks for 5-6 hours up to gillmans point. From there, we will continue on a much more gradual and easier path to the summit at uhuru peak, arriving around sunrise. After celebrating and taking photographs at the peak, we will head back down to kibo hut (about 3 hours) where we will eat lunch. From there we will continue our descent (3-4 hours) along the marangu route back to horombo camp where we will sleep tonight.
Day: 7
Horombo huts - marangu gate - arusha
We will wake up in the morning for breakfast and a celebration of our summit success with our team. After our celebration, we will descend to marangu gate through the forest (5-6 hours), stopping for lunch at mandara hut. At the end of the climb, you will receive a certificate for a successful summit. From there, we will get back into a vehicle to return you to your hotel in arusha where a hot shower will be waiting for you!
Day: 8
Departure
Today is your departure day. Transport will be arranged for you to kilimanjaro international airport (or to another destination in arusha if you are not flying through jro airport).
Depending on your flight departure time and your preferences, additional optional activities can be arranged around arusha for an extra cost (town tour, waterfall hike, cultural activities).
